In the 1970s, queer folks turned something as simple as a handkerchief into a language of their own. Known as the Hanky Code, different colors signaled different interests, while the pocket you wore it in helped communicate your role.

It was cruising. It was connection. It was queer ingenuity.

More than that, the Hanky Code represents a piece of LGBTQ+ history rooted in self-expression, consent, community, and finding one another in a world that often demanded queer people remain invisible.
